Habitat Observation

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Annie and I took a ride out to Doug’s this afternoon to check out the crop and let Annie run a little. I haven’t taken her out there ’cause Lucy (Doug’s beagle) had the same procedure Annie did and when Lucy and to stay quiet. When those two get together, it’s like old home week at the Howling family’s house. She sat in the truck real nice until I turned left onto his road and Annie was all over me. She didn’t howl like she has in the past, but she’s grown up some in the last couple of weeks and I for one, appreciate it. I try and run a very quiet and orderly life, but when Annie gets near Lucy, life changes.

After the two of them rubbed noses, and smelled each others’ butts, we headed across the street. Lucy couldn’t go yet ’cause her stitch’s aren’t out but Annie was more than happy to cover her watch. The Chickory is rebounding very nicely and the Rape/Kale is doing even better. The new vegitation is originating from the basil and it’s still too low for the deer to eat, so we may come out on top of this. Doug’s going to overseed the areas that didn’t recover with Rape so it’ll be mixed in with the Chickory too.

Today, the doe permits for private land hunting went on sale and we both bought one. There’s only 2000 alloted this year, so I suspect there won’t be any for sale tomorrow, but I’m sure going to try.

Fishing report 08/15/07

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

I went out on Lake Charlevoix fishing this evening, and the fish did much better than I. The air temperature was 77º at the bank, and 75.3º in the water. I fished from the boat launch in town to just beyond that new pier on the West side, then went straight across the lake to where Mill B/Circuit Controls was. From there I fished along the shore line to town dock and then back across and started over. I trolled with crocodiles, cleo’s, Rapala’s and a jig head with a crawler attached. I also still fished just off that new pier and then again near the town dock. I caught two perch and a very large something or other, took out a full sized Mallard. The mallard was swimming along with two other ducks and they weren’t in any way harmed. Must be the one was a Sunni and the other two were Shi’ite’s, and it was swimming in the wrong neighborhood. I don’t really know, I do know however, my butt hole got a hellava grip on my seat.

Onto us this day…

….a Son is born.

Charles Jason Langham was born this morning at 11:54 CDST. Jason weighed in at 7lbs 14oz and is 21″ long. Not only was John there for the beginning, he delivered him too! Talk about a “Full service Husband” he’s got it covered. ‘Trina and Jason are doing fine, and expect to be home early this evening.

Perseid shower a drizzle

I’ve been an amature astronomer since I was 5 years old, and August 12th has always been a date I look forward to. Watching the planet act as a vacuum cleaner as we make our path around the sun, has interested me since my first sightings. This morning at 3:45 I was watching the northeast sky and was a little disapointed in how few there we’re. To hear the ’star gazers’ speak of it, we’d need an umbrella to keep the little pebbles from hitting us. It didn’t turn out that way at all. Now, I didn’t set there the entire time, I’d watch for 20 minutes, or until my coffee ran out, and I’d come back in for a bit. The first 20 minutes was time well spent. I saw two doe’s eating Mrs. Annears’ perennials and a cottontail run through the weeds near the creek. The second 20 minutes I saw two hot ones and one streak that was very slow, relatively speaking. It must have been traveling along the same course as us instead of the planet busting through a cloud of comet debris. The third 20 minutes I only saw one, traveling from straight overhead towards the northeast at a very steep angle. I also saw a sign that says Fall’s coming, Orion’s belt was rising perpendicular to the horizon. I was tempted to get out my binoculars and have a look at the Nebula but remembered the mission was meteors. The belt will be there all winter, the meteors won’t. They wern’t this morning either.

Habitat Observation

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

About 4:45 this morning I was awakend by the sound of rain falling through the trees, and the rumble of thunder as it echoed down the valley. We haven’t had a sound like that in 6 weeks, almost 7 and it was a big relief to hear it. I’d been out there yesterday checking out the crop, and I’d wrote it all off. We talked about re-seeding it and hoping for some rain in the fall. After breakfast, I rode out there and had a look, and I’ve changed my mind. There was not one green leaf there yesterday, and this morning there’re new shoots everywhere, nice deep green ones. Using my middle finger, I dug a hole to see how far the moisture penitrated and it was farther than I could dig.

Administrative note / Comments and the “Outhouse”

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

After some looking around and actually reading some of the instructions, I found out how to approve the comments, so that works now. The other thing was the “Outhouse” access that Katrina has updated and it works now.

35 years today.

We’ve bred and born 4 gracious and loving people.

We have learned from and about each other that no one else can fathom.

You and I have fought for what we believed right and true.

The two of us know that what comes hence-forth is just another step to home.

35 years, today.

Markless in East Jordan

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Last Monday afternoon, my second oldest, Matthew, called me and asked if it would be all right if he came up and took Mark for a week or so. There’s going to be a Moore family reunion near Brooklyn, Mi on Saturday, and some of them, he hasn’t seen in a looong time. We agreed to meet in Cadillac today at 10am. It wasn’t 15 minutes after Matt hung up, that Mark was packed with the bags by the door.

Tuesday morning, Mark got up an hour earlier than usual, and started cleaning the house. He started out on the front porch and moved aft, right out the back door. He didn’t do this in one day, it took him a couple, but he did a better job than I do. It was embarassing. I’ve self proclaimed myself, “Housebitch extrodinair’” and was pretty proud of it, but I’ve gotta get my game back. Luckily, I’ve got a week to get started. (It’ll be clean Mark, honest)

I hope everyone has a good time in Brooklyn tomorrow, I’ll be thinking of you all, all day. I’d thought about coming, but remembered back to the last one, and with my standing with Pete, I thought it best to pass.

Administrative note / Comments

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

It’s been recently brought to my attention that the comments aren’t showing up when written after a blog entry. My administrative assistant is currently up to her hips in childbearing but I’m sure as one condition improves, the other one will too. Until then, please feel free to keep making them and for those of you who don’t, I wish you would. I might be doing something wrong in one way or the other, and I’d like to know the alternatives.

Oh, I’ve already flown kites and jumped in lakes, (though I’ve never self pro-created) if anyones thinking along those lines.

Habitat Observation

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Mark and I went out to Doug’s last night and from what I can see, the stuff’s still alive. The Chickory still hasn’t been eaten off much, so there’s a lot of vegitation and it’s mostly still green..of sorts. It’s easy to tell it’s still alive, but it’s looking pretty stressed. The Rape isn’t fairing as well. The deer have totally stripped the plants of all vegitation, so all you see are stems, and roots but the roots are very much alive. We all did a little rain dance (whether real or imagined) and it worked. Last night around 10:30, we had a gully washer move through here and I’m sure it was on it’s way to Doug’s. It’s 4:23 right now, so he ain’t up yet, but I’ll find out before the day’s over. A couple days ago, we were all up on the hill spreading annual rye mixed with Rape, and I’ll bet it’ll get green quick.
